Folklife Collection - Gay Women: From the Outside

by Salisbury University Students (1990)

1 folder (0.1 linear feet)

In 1990, former Salisbury University Student Shari L. Rupertus collected folk material. Her collection focuses on the folkgroup of women having same sex relationships, from an external perspective. In her paper, she points out how her informants rejected the term "homosexual" and preferred "gay", claiming that their lifestyle was not necessarily about sex. Furthermore, she rebukes many stereotypes about this folkgroup, explains their folk speech, and shares her personal experience of dealing with a friend who was bullied for being "gay".
